About This Service

What the work involves.

Staining and refinishing lets the character of real wood show through. JWS Home Improvement prepares surfaces carefully and applies stains and clear coats evenly so the grain reads true and the finish holds up to use. From trim and doors to cabinetry and woodwork, the goal is a finish that looks intentional and lasts.

Project considerations

Wood species, existing finish, and the desired depth of colour all shape the approach. We test stain on the actual surface, because the same colour reads differently on oak, pine, or maple. Interior and exterior wood have different demands for UV and moisture protection.

Preparation & planning

Refinishing is mostly preparation. We strip or sand existing finishes, clean the surface, and address any damage before stain or clear coat is applied. Proper drying time between coats is what gives a refinishing job its depth and durability.

Pricing: Every project is quoted individually based on its scope, size, materials, and condition. We don't use fixed rates — request an estimate and we'll provide a quote for your specific project.

Service FAQs

Questions about staining & refinishing.

Five common questions about this service. For more, see the full FAQ page.

Full FAQ page
Can you match an existing stain colour?+

Often, yes. We test stain on a sample of the same wood species because colour reads differently across species and grain. Matching an existing finish usually requires a custom blend and a test on the surface.

What's the difference between stain and a clear coat?+

Stain adds colour and highlights grain; a clear topcoat protects the wood and provides the sheen and durability. Most refinishing jobs use both — stain for colour, then a protective clear coat over it.

Do you refinish interior and exterior wood?+

Yes, with different products. Exterior wood needs UV and moisture resistance, while interior woodwork is chosen for wear, feel, and appearance. We select finishes suited to where the wood lives.

How durable is a refinished surface?+

Durability depends on the wood, the product, and the use. High-wear surfaces like stair treads or tabletops need tougher clear coats. We recommend finishes matched to how the surface will be used.

Can you refinish over an existing finish?+

Sometimes, if the existing finish is sound and compatible. Where it's failing or incompatible, stripping back to bare wood gives the most reliable result. We assess and advise before starting.
